Protecting Children and Youth

Child sexual abuse is a worldwide public health issue. Child abuse, particularly child sexual abuse, is reprehensible–especially when the wrongdoer is affiliated with the Church. The VIRTUS® programs assist the Church in being a safe haven for children and a messenger for preventing child sexual abuse within the Church and society in general. We seek to achieve this lofty goal through our child sexual abuse prevention program: Protecting God’s Children®.

You can find instructions for completing VIRTUS® training here.

In the Chicago Archdiocese and at St. Francis Xavier, we take protecting minors very seriously. Below you can find a recent letter from Cardinal Cupich, a document of what we do here at SFX to prevent abuse of minors, and the PowerPoint presentation Fr. Bill Tkachuk gave in the Fall 2018.

What We Do at SFX

Fr. Bill's Presentation

On Friday, May 9, 2019, Pope Francis "published an executive order mandating that all bishops implement a new universal law requiring all dioceses and religious orders to report abuse of minors and vulnerable adults.  The new law provides a process for investigating abuse by any member of the hierarchy, including cardinals, bishops and priests as well as religious men and women.  There is also a process for investigating the mishandling of such cases by bishops.  Now, all bishops’ conferences and religious congregations in every country around the world will have to meet more rigorous standards."
