Children's Liturgy of the Word
“Let the children come to me…”
— Matthew 19:14
Description:
Children’s Liturgy of the Word Reflectors work with the children at the Saturday 5:00 p.m. mass to present and interpret the Gospel in a special way. Shepherds assist the Reflectors. Reflectors and Shepherds escort children (through Grade 4) to the basement of the rectory, and follow a format of prayer, readings, and discussion until after the priest’s homily, when they return to church. There is always enthusiastic participation on the part of the children.
Time Commitment:
The Children’s Liturgy time commitment is minimal. A Reflector and his/her accompanying Shepherds are usually assigned a 5:00 p.m. Saturday mass once every 5 or 6 weeks(September or October through April only). Preparation time for the reflection varies according to the reflector and the Sunday reading involved. Usually 1-2 hours will be needed to study the provided readings and background information, and to develop a plan for the reflection with the children. A one hour training session is provided.
